The Hôtel de Caumont Morphs into an Exceptional Museum

Located in the Mazarin district, in the heart of Aix-en-Provence, the Hôtel de Caumont reopened on May 6, 2015 after an 18-month overhaul. This eighteenth-century jewel turned art center is readying to write a new page in its history.

Built by François Rolland of Réauville in 1715, the Hôtel de Caumont has since fulfilled many functions. An important center for the Resistance during the Second World War, it transformed into a music conservatory in 1964, before establishing itself as an art center today. Its latest owner Culturespaces initiated this new identity in order to transform the establishment into "a major cultural center for Aix-en-Provence and the south of France."

Chaired by Bruno Monnier, the private administrator of French monuments has given itself the means to succeed. After an extensive restoration program, Culturespaces has succeeded in returning this mansion, located close to the Cours Mirabeau, to its former glory, with the goal of making this new cultural institution a special space for the expression of the great names of art.

Thus, while two temporary exhibitions each year will put the fine arts in the spotlight, concerts, artistic performances and conferences will follow one another in the art center’s auditorium or shady gardens. An excellent program inaugurated with an exhibition from the Venetian painter Canaletto, which tends to demonstrate to what degree, more than just an exhibition space, the "Hôtel de Caumont is a space where art resonates."
